From a Witch to Wednesday: The Best Jewelry to Wear With Your Halloween Costume

One of my favorite things about being a National Jeweler editor is how often I get to play dress-up, trying on all sorts of beautiful jewelry.
There’s no better time to play dress-up than Halloween.
With the spooky season upon us, I thought I would combine two of my great loves—jewelry and Halloween—for my annual Halloween story.
For Halloweens past, I’ve explored cursed gemstones, cursed jewelry, and creepy jewelry.
This year, I’ll be pairing classic and contemporary costumes with my spookiest, sparkliest jewelry picks.
I tend to grab my Halloween accessories from Spirit Halloween but here’s what I’d do with an endless budget.
Witch
I’ve dressed up as a witch for Halloween quite a few times. You throw on a witch hat and a black dress and you’re ready to go.
It’s a fun, easy costume that lends itself to a lot of great jewelry.
I admire witches, those in pop culture and real life, as symbols of female empowerment, deriving their magic and power from within.
Bold statement jewels would be a great fit for a witch. I’d also throw in some snakes and spider webs.

This 14-karat yellow gold spider web ring with two bezel-set diamonds ($605) by Jennie Kwon Designs is bewitching.
This 18-karat yellow gold “Spells” ring by Sauer may be a little on the nose, but it works! It’s set with sapphires, ruby, and diamonds ($2,436).
Now this is an amulet! This Yael Designs 14-karat yellow gold amethyst necklace has a diamond-set snake wrapped around the gem ($3,386).
This 18-karat rose gold onyx, diamond, and coral bracelet ($38,100) by Picchiotti is giving off a very witchy vibe.
What’s a witch without one of her familiars? These 14-karat yellow gold snake earrings by Marrow Fine set with black diamonds and freshwater pearls ($3,000) would be a fitting tribute to a slithery companion.
Ballerina
I spent so much of my childhood in a dance studio that I never bothered to choose this costume growing up.
As an adult, I’d happily throw on a tutu and pick out a few dainty jewels. Pearls paired with elegant silhouettes would complement a graceful ballerina perfectly.
You can’t go wrong with pearl studs, especially these 18-karat yellow gold “Floret” pearl and diamond earrings by Verragio.
And a double-header pearl ring to match, like this one by Verragio. It’s an 18-karat yellow gold “Petal” toi et moi ring ($2,650) set with pearls and diamonds from the “Reverie” collection.
This “Macri” bangle by Buccellati has the elegance befitting a ballerina.
This 18-karat gold and diamond “Shiraz” choker ($8,900) by Ashaha is the finishing touch.
Mermaid
The “mermaidcore” trend has come and gone, but we could bring it back for a night.
I’m thinking pearls, of course, and sea blue jewels, with aquamarine at the top of the list.
These 18-karat rose gold jellyfish-like Assael earrings would wow any mermaid. The Willow Creek jasper earrings feature pink-toned champagne diamonds and fringe made of natural seed pearls (price available upon request).
Pearls and mermaids just make sense. I’d happily wear this 18-karat rose gold Picchiotti ring ($24,300) set with a 16 mm Tahitian pearl and round diamonds.
This 18-karat yellow gold “Fringe” seahorse necklace ($1,600) by Renna Jewels is a great fit for the mermaid looking to take her friends with her.
Let’s double up on the Renna Jewels pieces with this medium “Aegean” cuff ($18,000), complete with mermaid scales.
I think a mermaid would love aquamarine jewelry, like this Ray Griffiths aquamarine stretch bracelet with an 18-karat yellow gold bead ($1,090).
Wednesday Addams
There’s no version of the Addams Family that I don’t love, be it the 1960s series, the 1990s movie franchise, or the new animated versions.
I’ve yet to see “Wednesday” on Netflix but it’s on my to-do list, as Wednesday Addams has always been my favorite character in the series. She’s clever, witty, and macabre. What’s not to love?
For Wednesday, I’m getting an emo Hot Topic vibe, but elevated. Jewels featuring black diamonds or skull motifs would be a great fit.
I’d stay away from earrings because they could get caught in her signature pigtails.
This Buddha Mama skull ring is just frightening enough for Wednesday. The 20-karat yellow gold ring is adorned with black and white enamel and set with diamonds (price available upon request).
This “Wisp” necklace ($898) by Jennie Kwon Designs, set with an oval black diamond, is very Wednesday.
Let’s add a Jade Trau black diamond pavé eternity band in 18-karat yellow gold ($2,700) for a little sparkle.
This “Thorn” black diamond tennis bracelet ($13,500) in 14-karat yellow gold by Marrow Fine blends spooky and sparkly.
Lydia Deetz
You can’t talk about the great emo girls of movie history without mentioning Lydia Deetz from “Beetlejuice,” a Halloween classic that was recently revisited with the release of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
My favorite outfit from the original film is Lydia Deetz’s memorable red wedding dress, so that would be my costume, complete with the big hair and red veil.
As for jewelry, Fabergé has me covered with its new Beetlejuice Beetlejuice collection. Its spooky elegance is perfect for a Halloween bride.
Let’s start with the Sandworm spiral wrap ring in 18-karat white gold with red enamel and a ruby ($20,248) from the new Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice collection.
These Fabergé spiral earrings in red enamel with rubies and diamonds ($14,293) would match the dress perfectly.
We don’t want to be too matchy matchy, so let’s add this Fabergé spiral pendant with black enamel, emerald, and diamonds ($15,881).
This Headworm ruby collar bar by Fabergé would look right at home pinned to the front of Lydia’s dress.
Cleopatra
As a history buff with a love of snake jewelry, I don’t know why I hadn’t considered being Cleopatra sooner.
If I were going to be Queen of the Nile for the night, I’d pile on the gold jewelry, especially pieces inspired by snakes and scarabs.
This snake ring by Lord Jewelry is fit for a queen, for sure. Crafted in 18-karat yellow gold, it’s set with diamonds and rubies for eyes and features gorgeous enamel work (price available upon request).
This Harwell Godfrey scarab pendant is the perfect choice for Cleopatra. The 18-karat yellow gold pendant is set with smokey topaz, moonstone, and champagne diamonds ($11,995).
A 24-karat yellow gold “Double Leaf” cuff ($13,212) by Menē is inspired by Etruscan design, but I’d say it’s right at home on Cleopatra.
These large “Cleopatra” earrings ($219) by Simone I. Smith, crafted in 18-karat yellow gold over sterling silver, speak for themselves.
