John and Frieda Hanlon

On a fateful September night in 1990, Frieda walked into a pub on her first trip to London, and spied Irish-born John sitting alone in a corner. Their eyes met and after spending 2 hours telling each other their life stories, they knew they had to spend the rest of their lives with each other.

So that they could be together, Frieda lived in London for the better part of 3 years and worked the centuries’ old markets of Portobello Road and Covent Garden buying & selling jewelry which had already been her field for 10 years.

In 1992 they came to the States, back to where Frieda had lived in Maine, and in June of 1993 opened Stars in downtown Damariscotta. They quickly developed a good reputation, and knew in their hearts that Damariscotta was going to be a wonderful place to do business. The response was good, and the people friendly.

In December of 1997, John became a naturalized American citizen, of which he is very proud.

In June of 2004 they moved their business to where it is presently at 65 Main Street after purchasing the building and having it extensively renovated.

People consistently come from near and far to see the beautiful job John & Frieda have done to create such a warm and welcoming atmosphere for their customer-friendly business.

We would be pleased if you become a part of our life story by being a customer of Stars.
